As part of "The Core Knowledge Series," this book guides the teacher through a school year's worth of study and has been used successfully in American schools. It is designed to be used in conjunction with and to complete the regular school year's curriculum. What is Core Knowledge? "Core knowledge is, first of all, a body of widely used knowledge taken for granted by competent writers and speakers in the United States. Because this knowledge is taken for granted rather than explained when it is used, it forms a necessary foundation for the higher-order reading, writing, and thinking skills that children need for academic and vocational success. The universal attainment of such knowledge should be a central aim of curricula in our elementary schools, just as it is currently the aim in all world-class educational systems." (from the "General Introduction," page 2)

The text is designed to be read aloud to the student. Complete rhymes, stories, myths, and fables are included. There are also several maps, illustrations, and black-and-white photos throughout.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to give students plenty of activities to coincide with the lessons. For instance, in the Geography section, students should do plenty of drawing and coloring of maps to get familiar with the world's continents. (The book, however, does not contain outline maps to color; these can be found in another book or online.)
In the "How to Use This Book" section, it is advised to engage the students in conversation and discussion of the material as it is read aloud (active learning). This interaction may stimulate the child's curiosity, which could lead to further learning. Additionally, reading a lesson more than once is encouraged, since children like to hear good stories over and over again.
