This was Steinbeck's last novel. The title is a reference to the first two lines of Shakespeare's Richard III "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York ".The protagonist, Ethan Allen Hawley, works as a clerk in a grocery store after his late father lost his family's fortune. His wife and children are unhappy in their situation and pressure him to achieve more in life.
Bowing to this pressure he becomes more ruthless, and through what can only be described as truly evil measures, Hawley achieves a higher social status only to find he has allowed his corruption to spread to his son.
His redemption follows, but you will have to read the book to discover how he regains himself.
