This volume is recommended for study with children in the 4th to 8th grades.

There is a great deal of violence in the history of the world during this period, and because of that, it is not recommended for children younger than 4th grade. Author Bauer writes, "I have always tried to tell history as a story, to bring out the color and narrative threads of events. But with this history, I have found myself veering continually toward a more matter-of-fact and less dramatic tone. The events of the twentieth century—the bombing of Hiroshima, the purges of Stalin, to name only two—are dramatic enough. Turned into a story, they would be overwhelming."

The book has 42 chapters that cover the major events from around the world, and the activity book has corresponding review questions, outlining activities, composition questions, suggestions for additional reading, map work, art projects (including the proper colors for various countries' flags), geography projects, and other types of project suggestions.

Another handy feature of the activity book is a pronunciation guide for many of the foreign names. The text itself offers a timeline that can be used to help put the events in proper historical context.

The author also presents ideas on multi-level teaching that help homeschooling parents present the volume to their children who may be spread across in the grades. She warns, "Volume 4 of The Story of the World covers a span of time that contains many dark topics that require sensitive handling. We suggest that you skim through the activities in this guide and skip anything that might be inappropriate for your own family."

Not meant solely for homeschoolers, the volume can be used in a classroom setting as well. Bauer offers suggestions on how to incorporate the material.
