Product Details
The Scarlet Letter
From the back cover: "The story of a woman's open disgrace and a man's secret guilt."Scorned and rejected by her stern Puritan neighbors, Hester Prynne must wear the scarlet letter forever. But her guilty partner hides his identity and is admired by all who know him. Why does Hester refuse to reveal his name?
"A strangely modern masterpiece of passion, sorrow, and atonement by one of America's greatest novelists."
CliffsNotes
From "A Note to the Reader"—"These notes present a clear discussion of the actions and thought of the work under consideration and a concise interpretation of the artistic merits and significant."THE NOTES ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE TEXT ITSELF OR FOR THE CLASSROOM DISCUSSION OF THE TEXT, AND THE STUDENT WHO SO ATTEMPTS TO USE THEM IS DENYING HIMSELF THE VERY EDUCATION THAT HE IS PRESUMABLY GIVING HIS MOST VITAL YEARS TO ACHIEVE."
From the Dust Jacket of the book—"Nathaniel Hawthorne’s engrossing story of love, sin, guilt, and redemption is played out against the stark background of Puritan New England, where battled up passions warp and corrode the human heart. Yet to that drab and austere landscape Hawthorne brings shrewd psychological studies and vivid symbolic images that burn themselves into the reader’s imagination."
