Product Details

This edition contains two essays that follow the text of the novel:

  1. Mark Van Doren (1894-1972) - American poet, critic, novelist, and editor, who was the author of several biographies, including Nathaniel Hawthorne.
  2. George Parsons Lathrop (1851-1898) - American editor, biographer, and poet, who was the author of A Study of Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1876, five years after Lathrop's marriage to Hawthorne's daughter, Rose.

From the dust jacket: "What dark secret binds together these three people—the earnest young pastor Arthur Dimmesdale, the wizened old scholar Roger Chillingworth, and beautiful Hester Prynne? Condemned for adultery, marked as an outcast by the red badge of shame she must wear, Hester cradles in her arms her fatherless child Pearl and buries the answer deep within her breast.

"Nathaniel Hawthorne's engrossing story of love, sin, guilt, and redemption is played out against the stark background of Puritan New England, where battled up passions warp and corrode the human heart. Yet to that drab and austere landscape Hawthorne brings shrewd psychological studies and vivid symbolic images that burn themselves into the reader's imagination."
