GOOD: This paperback book is in good condition, its spine, covers, and pages showing the usual wear of a book this age (1961). There are penciled-in underlining and notes in some of the pages' margins, but these marks do not obscure the text and may be easily erased by the buyer.
The textured cover, albeit made of paper, makes the book appear bound inside a leather cover and its weight has protected the volume quite well.

Francis MacDonald Cornford explains that translating Plato's Republic word-for-word does not do it justice. He concludes, "In brief, the answer is that in many places the effect in English is misleading, or tedious, or grotesque and silly, or pompous and verbose."
Cornford's aim is to make the translation easy to read, yet to preserve Plato's style, "ranging from the tone of ordinary conversation to an almost lyrical eloquence."
