This is a classic story about wilderness survival and a 1960 Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Book, and the winner of the Hans Christian Andersen International Award.

It's about a boy named Sam who runs away from New York City to live in the Catskill Mountain wilderness. He takes only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, and some flint and steel to survive on his own. He faces many obstacles, but prevails.

This book is studied in a literature unit by Total Language Plus, a Christian publisher of literature-based studies. It was made into a movie in 1969.
