From the back cover: "Computers perform countless tasks ranging from the business critical to the recreational, but regardless of how differently they may look and behave, they're all amazingly similar in basic function. Once you understand how the microprocessor—or central processing unit (CPU)—works, you'll have a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts at the heart of all modern computing.

"Inside the Machine, from the co-founder of the highly respected Ars Technica website, explains how microprocessors operate—what they do and how they do it. The book uses analogies, full-color diagrams, and clear language to convey the ideas that form the basis of modern computing. After discussing computers in the abstract, the book examines specific microprocessors from Intel, IBM, and Motorola, from the original models up through today's leading processors."

Inside the Machine provides a look into the hardware of the machine we call a computer. What makes this book different from all the others written on the subject is that it is written on a very basic level in the beginning of the book and progresses to a more in-depth discussion of how a computer performs its tasks. Figures aren't used just once as in many documents, but are referred to multiple times in a section to drive home the points being made and further explain the aspects of the computer being discussed.

If asked, most people know that an ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is that thingy in the computer that does math, but most can't tell you how. After reading this book you will not only know how the ALU does math, but how the data is transmitted to the ALU and how it leaves the ALU to its next destination.
