From the section entitled "On the structure of the handbook": "During the preparation of this handbook, the authors proceeded on the assumption that the material enclosed in it may be useful to those making their acquaintance with splines, as well as to those who have already used splines in their work. At the same time, this book is not intended to be a textbook, and it would be advisable to refer to the appropriate books and scientific papers for comprehensive explanations and detailed proofs (a small number is given at the end of the book). ...

"At all stages of our work on the handbook, a lot of attention was given to the development of its structure and the presentation of the material most convenient to the user. It would be worthwhile to describe in more detail some of the distinctive features of this handbook."
