This book is divided into two parts: the first part is titled "A History of Medieval Europe"; the second, "The Lands of Medieval Europe." The history section contains an overview for the entire region, begins with Europe in AD 350, and ends with the discovery—by Europeans—of the world beyond Europe in the late 15th century. Each modern European country's history is covered in more detail in the second section.
The contents of the book includes cultural and historical examinations in addition to maps. There are a generous number of illustrations and photographs of artifacts. At the end of the book is a glossary, a further reading section, a gazetteer, and an index.
