The Story's Setting: "Historically the narrative covers the ten years from Fulvia's death in 40 B.C. to Cleopatra's death on August 29, 30 B.C. On the stage, the action covers twelve days. Thus Shakespeare telescoped history for dramatic effect and produced a play that gave the illusion of compactness. The fact that incidents in the play actually spread over a decade went unnoticed by the spectators." — From "Egyptian Enchantress" (page ix).

CliffsNotes

From “A Note to the Reader”—”These notes present a clear discussion of the actions and thought of the work under consideration and a concise interpretation of the artistic merits and significant.

“THE NOTES ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR THE TEXT ITSELF OR FOR THE CLASSROOM DISCUSSION OF THE TEXT, AND THE STUDENT WHO SO ATTEMPTS TO USE THEM IS DENYING HIMSELF THE VERY EDUCATION THAT HE IS PRESUMABLY GIVING HIS MOST VITAL YEARS TO ACHIEVE.”
