Sophocles' Antigone (pronounced: an-TIG-uh-nee) tells the story of the fate that befalls the children of Oedipus. Polynices has led a rebellion against his brother, Eteocles, now ruler of Thebes. Both have died in combat. Creon, their uncle, has assumed the throne and declared that their bodies shall lay where they have fallen under penalty of death to anyone who defies his order.
Antigone, their sister, defies the order of Creon. The resulting actions and reactions of the gods against Creon make this one of Sophocles' best tragedies.
