Scrappers is a series of nine books by Dean Hughes that focus on the members of the Scrappers baseball team (mostly boys, but there is one girl). They’re fighting for a shot at the championship, but must each overcome personal challenges.
Book 1: Play Ball! – “All Robbie wants to do is play baseball. When he and his best friend, Trent, miss the deadline for signing up for the summer league, they have to scramble to put a team together. Unfortunately, the group they assemble includes a loudmouthed girl who challenges Robbie for his beloved shortstop position—but an even bigger problem is the lie on which the Scrappers are based, which could strike out the team before their first game.”
Book 2: Home Run Hero – “Wilson’s long ball makes him the Scrappers’ power hitter, except he misses as many pitches as he hits. So Coach Carlton offers him some pointers that improve his stance and his swing—and now he can’t hit anything. Soon everyone’s offering Wilson advice, but his hitting just keeps getting worse and worse. Can Wilson figure out how to get back his groove before the team hero becomes the team goat?”
Book 3: Team Player – “Trent knows he isn’t as talented a player as his best friend, Robbie, or loudmouthed Gloria—but he’s content being a solid, reliable member of the team. So why does Robbie’s and Gloria’s constant bragging upset him so much? Is it really just because their hotdogging is beginning to undermine the team spirit the Scrappers have finally started to build—or does he secretly wish he had something to brag about, too?”
