## The Theory of Critical Phenomena: An Introduction to the Renormalization Group (Softcover)"We believe this book does fill a gap in the literature ... available on the theory of critical phenomena. ... [At] the end of each chapter we give several problems, which we hope will help readers to become familiar with the concepts and techniques introduced in that chapter. Complete solutions to all the problems are given at the back of the book." — The authors in the Preface ## $46.29 |

**GOOD:** The book has slight signs of use and shelf wear, but the binding is tight. There is a dedication written in ink by a previous owner on the title page and a small brown stain on a few of the first pages (end of Contents and beginning of Chapter 1), but the remaining pages are clean. There is some aging beginning to show on the pages (1992).

## Description

From the back cover: “The successful calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions is one of the main achievements of theoretical physics over the last twenty five years. This was achieved through the use of scaling and field-theoretic techniques which have since become standard equipment in many areas of physics, especially quantum field theory.

“This book provides a thorough introduction to these techniques at a level suitable for beginning graduate students. The text assumes only a sound undergraduate background in physics and mathematics.

“Continuous phase transitions are introduced, then the necessary statistical mechanics are summarized, followed by standard models, some exact solutions, and techniques for numerical simulation. Next, the real-space renormalization group and mean-field theory are explained and illustrated. The last eight chapters cover the Landau-Ginzburg model, from physical motivation, through diagrammatic perturbation theory and renomaliziation, to the renormalization group and the calculation of critical exponents above and below the critical temperature.”
