Product Details
This edition was authorized by the estate of F. Scott Fitzgerald.
From the back cover: “For the first time in paperback, one of the classics of twentieth-century literature, The Great Gatsby, is available in a definitive, textually accurate edition. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan has been acclaimed by generations of readers. But the first edition contained a number of errors resulting from Fitzgerald’s extensive revisions and a rushed production schedule. Subsequent printings introduced further departures from the author’s words. This edition, based on the Cambridge critical text, restores all the language of Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. Drawing on the manuscript and surviving proofs of the novel, along with Fitzgerald’s later revisions and corrections, this is the authorized text—The Great Gatsby as Fitzgerald intended it.”
The late Matthew J. Bruccoli, a highly-regarded biographer and scholar of Fitzgerald, provided the notes and preface to this edition.
Following the text of the novel, this edition includes several sections of value to the student:
- The Text of The Great Gatsby in which Bruccoli explains why there exist different versions of the book
- Publisher’s Afterword discusses the creation of the cover art and possible inspiration for some of Fitzgerald’s imagery, as well as a map of Long Island, the setting for the story
- Explanatory Notes discusses in detail the text’s puns, imagery, and historic and geographic allusions
