## Description

This is the English edition (there also is a German edition).

Continued from the back cover: “The first half covers the geometry of curves and surfaces, which provide much of the motivation and intuition for the general theory. Special topics that are explored include Frenet frames, ruled surfaces, minimal surfaces, and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem.

“The second part is an introduction to the geometry of general manifolds, with particular emphasis on connections and curvature. The final two chapters are insightful examinations of the special cases of spaces of constant curvature and Einstein manifolds.

“The text is illustrated with many figures and examples. For the second edition, a number of errors were corrected and some text and a number of figures have been added. The prerequisites are undergraduate analysis and linear algebra.”

$74.29

"This book studies the original results, and their extension, of the Russian mathematician, S.A. Geršgorin, who wrote a seminal paper in 1931, on how to easily obtain estimates of all n eigenvalues (characteristic values) of any given n-by-n complex matrix." — From the back cover

#### Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces (Hardback)

#### An Invitation to Modern Number Theory (Hardback)

$47.49

"In a manner accessible to beginning undergraduates,

*An Invitation to Modern Number Theory*introduces many of the central problems, conjectures, results, and techniques of the field, such as the Riemann Hypothesis, Roth's Theorem, the Circle Method, and Random Matrix Theory." — From the back cover#### Euclidean and Non-Euclidean Geometry: An Analytic Approach (Softcover)

$23.39

"This book gives a rigorous treatment of the fundamentals of plane geometry — Euclidean, spherical, elliptical, and hyperbolic — from an analytic point of view." — From the back cover

#### Introduction to Analysis of the Infinite, Book I (Hardback)

$89.95

"...I have divided this work into two books; in the first of these I have confined myself to those matters concerning pure analysis. In the second book I have explained those things which must be known from geometry, since analysis is ordinarily developed in such a way that its application to geometry is shown. ... [I]n the first book, since all of analysis is concerned with variable quantities and functions of such variables, I have given full treatment to functions. I have also treated the transformation of functions and functions as the sum of infinite series. In addition I have developed functions in infinite series..." — From the Preface by the Author, Leonhard Euler

#### Physics for Mathematicians: Mechanics I (Hardback)

$76.95

"...I have written this work in order to learn the subject myself, in a form that I find comprehensible. And readers familiar with some of my previous books probably realize that this has pretty much been the reason for those works also." — Michael Spivak, Author, in the Preface (page vii)

#### Introduction to Symmetry Analysis (Softcover with CD-ROM)

$74.79

"Symmetry analysis based on Lie group theory is the most important method for solving nonlinear problems aside from numerical computation. ... The text emphasizes applications, and numerous worked examples are used to illustrate basic concepts." — From the back cover

#### Iterative Methods for Sparse Linear Systems, Second Edition (Softcover)

$73.95

"This book can be used to teach graduate-level courses on iterative methods for linear systems. Engineers and mathematicians will find its contents easily accessible, and practitioners and educators will value it as a helpful resource. The preface includes syllabi that can be used for either a semester- or quarter-length course in both mathematics and computer science." — From the back cover

#### Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics: Projective Geometry (Softcover)

$68.29

"The prerequisites for reading this book are fairly limited: a good command of linear algebra, some knowledge of quadratic forms and field extensions, and a few notions about the irreducibility of polynomials and factorization in rings of polynomials." — Pierre Samuel, Author, in the Introduction

#### Handbook of Integral Equations (Hardback)

$66.59

"To accommodate different mathematical backgrounds, the authors avoid special terminology; outline some of the methods in a schematic, simplified manner; number the equations and formulas separately in each section; and arrange the equations in increasing order of complexity." — From the back cover

#### An Introduction to Random Matrices (Hardback)

$53.95

"The theory of random matrices plays an important role in many areas of pure mathematics and employs a variety of sophisticated mathematical tools (analytical, probabilistic, and combinatorial). This diverse array of tools, while attesting to the vitality of the field, presents several formidable obstacles to the newcomer, and even to the expert probabilist. This rigorous introduction to the basic theory is sufficiently self-contained to be accessible to graduate students in mathematics or related sciences who have mastered probability theory at the graduate level, but who have not necessarily been exposed to advanced notions of functional analysis, algebra, or geometry." — From the back cover

#### Measure and Integral: An Introduction to Real Analysis (Hardback)

$53.29

"This volume develops the classical theory of the Lebesgue integral and some of its applications. The integral is initially presented in the context of

*n*-dimensional Euclidean space, following a thorough study of the concepts of outer measure and measure. A more general treatment of the integral, based on an axiomatic approach, is later given." — From the back cover#### Classical Mechanics: Theory and Mathematical Modeling (Hardcover)

$49.95

"Classical mechanics is a chief example of the scientific method organizing a 'complex' collection of information into theoretically rigorous, unifying principles; in this sense, mechanics represents one of the highest forms of mathematical modeling. This textbook covers standard topics of a mechanics course, namely, the mechanics of rigid bodies, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, stability and small oscillations, an introduction to celestial mechanics, and Hamilton-Jacobi theory, but at the same time features unique examples—such as the spinning top including friction and gyroscopic compass—seldom appearing in this context. In addition, variational principles like Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics are treated in great detail." — From the back cover

#### Interior Point Methods for Linear Optimization, Second Edition (Hardback)

$46.59

"Linear Optimization (LO) is one of the most widely applied and taught techniques in mathematics, with applications in many areas of science, commerce and industry. The dramatically increased interest in the subject is due mainly to advances in computer technology and the development of Interior Point Methods (IPMs) for LO." — From the back cover

#### Iterative Methods for Solving Linear Systems (Softcover)

#### Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics: Linearity, Symmetry, and Prediction in the Hydrogen Atom (Hardback)

#### Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Second Edition (Hardback)

$41.49

"The outlook of the second edition is the same as that of the original: to present linear algebra as the theory and practice of linear equations and linear mappings. Where it aids understandings and calculations, I don't hesitate to describe vectors as arrays of numbers and describe mappings as matrices."—by the author, from the Preface

#### Use R! : R Through Excel: A Spreadsheet Interface for Statistics, Data Analysis, and Graphics (Softcover)

$39.95

"R, a free and open source program, is one of the most powerful and the fastest growing statistics program.
