Product Details
Continued from the back cover: “Paul R. Halmos is well known for his research in various areas of mathematics, among them functional analysis, ergodic theory, and measure theory. He is also one of the most widely read expositors of higher mathematics today. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1938 from the University of Illinois, he held academic positions at various universities, among them the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, and Indiana University.
“Paul Halmos’ life and professional career give fascinating insights into the relationship of a mathematician to society at large, to his colleagues, and, what is perhaps most complex, to himself. The book contains may photographs of prominent mathematicians, several taken by the author.”
NOTE: Paul R. Halmos passed away October 2, 2006.
