This book is strictly for use in religious settings (Jewish and Christian) and does not contain signs used in secular life, which are taught in the companion book by the same author, Signing: How to Speak with Your Hands .
In the Introduction, the author relates the history of the influence the Church has had in Deaf Education. Also, in the section entitled "Ministry to the Deaf in the United States," Costello traces the history of religious ministry in the Jewish faith and also in the Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, and Baptist Christian denominations.
The guide contains an alphabetical listing for each word or concept with definitions and illustrations. Such entries include names, such as "Abraham," the various religious offices, such as "Deacon," and other religiously-based vocabulary.
At the end of the 219-page guide is an index for quick look-ups.
