Neil Armstrong Has Passed Away at 82

Neil Armstrong - Apollo 11 - NASAAstronaut Neil Armstrong (NASA)

The first man to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, has passed away today (August 25, 2012) at the age of 82.

His family’s announcement, which can be read in full at the NeilArmstrongInfo.com website, stated, “We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.”

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden stated on the NASA website, “As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong. We mourn the passing of a friend, fellow astronaut and true American hero.”

Armstrong’s first step onto the surface of the moon, accompanied by the iconic declaration, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind,” was symbolic of the new age in manned space exploration.

We extend our condolences to Armstrong’s family and friends.
