Random House’s Magic Tree House Series

Magic Tree HouseThe Magic Tree House books were introduced in 1992 and are written for young readers in the first through third grades (6-8-year-olds). If you’re using these books as the foundation for unit studies, you may be interested in the Magic Tree House Fact Tracker volumes that help parents and teachers delve deeper into the topic of the stories. For example, the Fact Tracker companion to Dinosaurs Before Dark, the first Magic Tree House book, is Dinosaurs.

When we started using these books for unit studies, the Fact Trackers were not yet published for the volumes we were studying (the first Fact Tracker wasn’t published until 2000), so we did most of the research ourselves. I think this made it more challenging and fun, but if you’re pressed for time, the Fact Trackers give you a boost in supporting material. The website featured below also has lesson plans that might interest your first to fourth graders.

Magic Tree House Website

Random House, the publisher of the series, has created this website for young readers, parents, and teachers. Features include games, personal accounts for readers, sample pages and a shop from which you can buy a book or an e-book, biographies of the authors and illustrator, and a special page about reading tours, the musical, and the planetarium show based on the Magic Tree House series.

The teacher’s section contains lesson plans and a forum for sharing ideas. For parents, the publisher provides an e-mail subscription list for the latest news about upcoming book releases, tour dates, and special offers on Magic Tree House–related products and events.
