The Weather Outside Is Frightful

We’re located in Eastern Pennsylvania and are currently experiencing some of the coldest temperatures on record (yet, not quite record-breaking). So, we thought that it might be interesting to focus on weather and the books we have that cover this topic.

When we’re teaching our young students, we often use two terms: Climate and Weather. There are differences in the two, however, that should be noted:

Climate — “the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds, throughout the year, averaged over a series of years.” (dictionary.com, emphasis ours).

Weather — “the state of the atmosphere with respect to wind, temperature, cloudiness, moisture, pressure, etc.” (dictionary.com, emphasis ours).

We use climate zone maps to determine long-term solutions such as what crops will grow well and what are appropriate building materials. We use weather maps to determine if we need to take an umbrella or wear an extra layer to combat the cold today.

Climate and Weather in Our Catalog

We’ve provided a mini-catalog of educational materials we currently have on-hand that address climate and weather (you can also view this mini-catalog from our permanent Weather Subject Page). If you’d like to narrow it down to more specific items, use our list of keywords. And, as always, we’d love to add your items when you consign with us.

Keywords: Climate, Global Warming, Hurricanes, Meteorology, Tornadoes, Weather
