We’ve just taken a trip down our homeschooling memory lane by adding to our online catalog several titles in Mary Pope Osborne’s The Magic Tree House book series from Random House.

These books, which we used for literature-based unit studies, are written for children ages 6 to 8 and are full of adventure, history, science, social studies, and fantasy. Using the magic of Camelot and a child’s favorite retreat, Osborne weaves a continuing saga of adventure for siblings Jack and Annie as they open a book in the Magic Tree House and travel through time to some of the world’s most pivotal historical events and locations.

Started in 1992, the series of adventures has grown to over 50 books, with the 52nd just released (Soccer on Sunday on May 27, 2014. See ordering info in our special MTH store). Osborne’s husband and sister have joined her in producing both the adventures and their companion research volumes, the Fact Tracker series.

Unit Studies Using the Stories and Their Fact Tracker Companions

When we first started using these volumes in our home school, the Fact Trackers had not yet been published (the first one was published in 2000). So, we did our own research to create adventure- and knowledge-filled unit studies that lasted several weeks. Now that the Fact Trackers are being released to coincide with the new volumes, putting together a unit study has become even easier if you’re pressed for time.

These Fact Trackers, however, are not meant to be lesson plans, but merely provide background information about the topic of the adventure. As an example, for Volume 48, A Perfect Time for Pandas, the Fact Tracker companion is Pandas and Other Endangered Species. Not only can your unit study include pandas and other endangered species, but also information about China and the story’s setting in history, the 2008 Great Sichuan Earthquake.

Speaking of earthquakes, one of our first Magic Tree House-based unit studies used Earthquake in the Early Morning (Volume #24) for an earthquake unit study. Jack and Annie travel back in time to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Already, the geographic, historical, and scientific aspects of the story are evident, and with a little more research and imagination, art, music, applied math, and language arts can easily be worked in to make the unit study complete.

If you’re planning a unit study with one of these books as its foundation, you might be interested in the chart below that correlates the story with its Fact Tracker companion. We’ve also included a search link for the adventure’s title and a few keywords that link to supporting materials that you may find within our catalog (the results will vary as the content of our catalog changes).

More information about both series can be found in our Virtual Mall’s Random House’s Magic Tree House Series feature page, which highlights Random House’s own Magic Tree House website where additional online resources, including lesson plans, can be found.
