Science Curriculum from Kindergarten through 12th Grade

If you’re looking for a science curriculum series that encourages your child to explore science independently and through a Christian world view, you should consider the series published by Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc.

Founded by Dr. Jay Wile, whom we had the pleasure of meeting at a local curriculum fair, Apologia Educational Ministries has expanded their science textbook series to meet the needs of homeschoolers in Kindergarten through the 12th Grade.

The Elementary textbooks are for Kindergarten through 6th Grade, are written by Jeannie Fulbright, and are divided into 13 or 14 lessons each.

  • Exploring Creation with Astronomy
  • Exploring Creation with Botany
  • Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day
  • Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day
  • Exploring Creation with Zoology 3: Land Animals of the Sixth Day
  • Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology

The Middle and High School textbooks are for 7th through 12th Grade and are written by Dr. Jay Wile and Marilyn F. Durnell. These textbooks are divided into 16 modules, which can be done in two-week units with some time to spare in a 36-week school year. The Advanced books are equivalent to one year at the university level.

  • Exploring Creation with General Science
  • Exploring Creation with Physical Science
  • Exploring Creation with Biology
  • Exploring Creation with Chemistry
  • Exploring Creation with Physics
  • Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology
  • Exploring Creation with Marine Biology
  • Exploring Creation with Advanced Chemistry
  • Exploring Creation with Advanced Physics

Each lesson or module contains lots of hands-on experiments and plenty of review or discussion questions.

How We Used the Curriculum

When we got started, only a few of these textbooks had been published. Because of this, we began the series with Exploring Creation with General Science in the 5th Grade, although this text is recommended to be used by 7th or 8th grade students. If your student has a strong math background, they should be able to start this sequence of textbooks early. It should be noted that the next textbook in the series, Exploring Creation with Physical Science, requires 7th Grade math skills.

After getting started with Exploring Creation with General Science, we continued the series with Exploring Creation with Physical Science, Exploring Creation with Biology, Exploring Creation with Chemistry, and finally, Exploring Creation with Physics in the 9th Grade. Physics became Stephen’s emphasis in community college (which he began attending in the 10th Grade), so he kept that textbook as a reference.

At first, I read the lessons aloud and we did the experiments together. Then, one day, I told my son, “You know, Dr. Wile wrote these textbooks in such a casual style that it’s almost like he’s with us as we study. He wanted it that way so that you could read these lessons on your own…just in case I lose my voice.” That day was the last day that I read a science lesson to him.

The experiments start with using things from around the house, but as the area of study becomes more concentrated, the more specific and technical the equipment requirements become (such as using a microscope for biology). For this reason, group study is a great alternative. Also, if you ever need to ask a question, Wile and the other writers of the series offer their support through several means, including a website and e-mail.
